Thomas University Library-Reserves

Library Reserve Policy

Library Reserves are available in print at the circulation desk.

All full or part time instructors may place circulating library materials or their own personal materials on reserve for their classes, for one semester at a time. Materials may be placed on reserve at any time during the semester.

At the end of each semester, all items will be taken off reserve. The instructor must claim personal items within one week of the start of the following semester, or they will be considered gifts to the library. The library may then add the items to the permanent collection if deemed appropriate, or dispose of the items.

No periodicals or reference materials will be placed on reserve as they will always be available in the library. However, photocopies of articles can be placed on reserve.

Instructors must indicate if they wish the materials to be used in the library only, or if items may be checked out of the library for a specified period of time. Students keeping reserve items longer than the specified period of time will be charged $1.00 per day overdue. If a library item on reserve is lost by a student, replacement costs of the item plus a $5.00 processing fee will be charged to the student. If an instructor's personal copy is lost by the student, the instructor will decide the consequences for the student.

Placing Items on Reserve

Faculty should attempt to use the guidelines below to help the Circulation Manager insure that reserve materials are made available to students in a timely manner.

1. Advance Delivery - Please deliver materials which are not part of the Library collection (your personal copies of books, disks, or papers) to the Access Services Assistant at least 1 business day before students will be required to use them.

This advance delivery is necessary to allow time to notify student staff assistants that these item(s) have been placed on reserve and the particular policies for lending them out.

2. Library Books and Texts - Please notify the Circulation Manager of the titles and edition numbers of any course textbooks or library books you wish to place on reserve at least 2 weeks prior to the beginning of the term. This advance notice is necessary so that we may recall copies of items which are checked out by other borrowers.

3. Numbers of Copies - Please provide sufficient numbers of copies of sample tests, problem sets, diskettes, or photocopied articles to the Circulation Manager to insure that your students will be able to use them without the need to be "wait-listed" to access popular required materials. Please note that advance delivery is necessary for these items.

If you have any questions regarding this policy, or closed reserves in general, please contact the Circulation Manager at 226-6959.
